Is it time for the better off in this country to make a non-detrimental financial contribution to a government fund to help those who will suffer most in thisCovid 19 pandemic ?

Personally I think it would be the ideal opprtunity for the Royal family to set an example here which might encourage the many thousands of extremely well off from tycoons to professional footballers and beyond. It would releive a lot of suffering.

"it's a hypothetical situation designed to illustrate the difference in attitudes"

It's a well-worn cliché turned into a celeb encounter, I'll file it along with 'dozen bottles of poo' and other self agrandising tripe.
sorry if this is a struggle doug me old china.
I've still got 5 bottles of GH Mumm left!
I'd happily do a bank transfer to the government for £10000 today if enough others would do the same and it would allow us to solve the problem quickly and get back to some sort of normality. But even if 1 million other people did the same it would hardly make a difference. The problem is far too big. But money will have to be pumped in to support those too ill to work and those laid off and we are all going to have to pay for it eventually.
The richest (apart from the tax avoiders) already pay the bulk of the tax here and that will continue to be the case when the taxes go up in a year or so.
Thanks Andy, I should have thought about that. Makes sense.
if all the poor were asked to donate a quid it would probably generate more revenue

Good luck with that, though I think they already do, it's called Tax.
interestingly, the economically "most vulnerable" in society (ie those on benefits) won't have a problem - they will still be getting the same amount they normally get - those who work (usually) will now become the most vulnerable
Yes- and rents paid/housing benefit. But I wouldn't want to swap places with them even though my work may dry up if schools close for a few months as I think is likely.
I've got my money on it being Elvis.

Well, thanks for your answers but I did refer to 'a non-detrimental' contribution and if I were, say, a proffesional footballer I would willingly make a one-off donation of a week's wages to the pot, that's hardly 95% of a top player's pay - not a 'penalty' , a voluntary contribution. And although I'm retired and far from 'rich' I could muster up a hundred or two without breaking the bank. It's called 'Philanthropy' and helping the genuinely affected -not scroungers.
ficfac send it to me! I will use it to keep the economy moving!
