Can they do this? It means that all the staff, most of whom are employed, won't get their money.

Mine closed after the PMs announcement on Monday, yes they can do this as it’s a non essential service they provide
Ohhh sorry HW , just seen the redundancy bit, that is bad craic, Do the people concerned have contracts?
The employed ones should get paid what they are owed for work done plus notice pay.. But it'll be difficult if the business has any net assets. Are they eligible for statutory redundancy pay?
I thought most hairdressers were self employed
I think the OP is asking about the redundancy bit, bobbi.

They should be Furloughing some or all of their staff which means they will., eventually, get 80% of their salary for 3 months.

No most of them are not self employed. I don't know about contracts. My hairdresser said she won't get anything and she has been there for a long time.
They will have contracts, even if not written down. But apart from the furloughing option (which means paperwork for the employer and no benefit for him/her unless he/she wants to retain the employees in case it reopens) I'm not sure what else can be done- there are no customers

Thank you for the answers. It seems very unfair doesn't it. The salon will not be re-opening.
There's also Statutory Redundancy Pay (usually 1 weeks pay for every year worked there after 2 years of service)
Same where I get my nails done helly, closed not to reopen , staff redundant
Ah, right, so they've decided to shut permenantly. SRP should still apply.
Sadly its happening all over the country. Yesterday over 100,000 new people registered for Universal Credit as shops, printers, hairdressers, cafes, pubs, hotels, coach companies and many more all closed. These employers could claim the 80% from the government to retain the teams, but many simply know they wont survive and have closed altogether.
