Countries that have successfully contain Coronavirus have done so by extensive testing, and tracing people who have been in contact with those who tested Positive.

But in the UK hardly any testing for coronavirus is taking place, and no tracing.
The Government aspire to testing 10,000 a day by the beginning of May, but are well short of that figure today. Even when the 10,000 tests a day is attained, it would take 18 years to test everyone. (We are probably missing more cases than we are finding).

Given that the first UK case was 10 weeks ago, Is this nothing short of a disgrace ?

The more valid points in this post might have had more impact without the unfortunate misreading of 100,000 for 10,000. Then again, even with that correction it's probably unrealistic to expect testing to be any more rapid than that. The current highest test volume is in the US, and even they are running not much more than 200,000 tests a day in a larger country with more resources.

And what happens to the vast majority of those tested who are not positive.

Surley they have to be tested again and again? Testing only has limited advantages for those in the front line to enable them to keep working without spreading it or taking unnecessary days off.

Test appointments can only be made if the key worker or a person they are living with are showing symptoms. If it’s the latter p, then it’s the person showing symptoms who is tested, not the key worker.

The purpose of testing if done properly is to isolate the positive (as far as possible) from the negative, and to provide effective treatment. True, a negative test doesn't rule out a positive one in future, but it still is useful information *now*.

Just had someone on the radio who was involved in this exercise in 2016 and said it was based on a major flu pandemic so wasn't comparable to the Covid situation.

I think that this issue won't go away though- although the report wasn't published we know they said there would be a shortage of ventilators (which we hadn't prepared for pre Covid), the NHS couldn't cope (well we have spread the peak/flattened the curve so we learnt from that) and we wouldn't have space for the bodies (hopefully we will by spreading this and using isolation/distancing).

Others say we are using the plans and were able to adapt them to form the basis of our approach.
But maybe now is not the time to spend time on this. There will undoubtedly be an enquiry afterwards and people will be asked some very awkward questions. But let's win the covid battle first

Mind you, not that prophetic. He was talking in the wake of the Ebola crisis. Because that was contained before hitting "us", we ignored it - well, didn't do much about it, anyway.

Incidentally it took 4.5 years following that Ebola outbreak to release a vaccine for it. That's the record for the fastest a vaccine has ever been released, to date ...
