In 2016, NFL quarterback, Colin Kaepernick participated in a silent protest. Tom Goldman from NPR News explains:

Colin Kaepernick took a knee during the playing of the national anthem before games last season. He said he was protesting the treatment of people in black communities during a time of great tension sparked by police shootings of African-Americans.

But his actions sparked outrage. Critics called his pregame protests anti-American, even accusing him of being against the military, a charge Kaepernick has repeatedly denied. Bringing awareness and sparking social change were his only motivations, he says.

His supporters now allege league owners are freezing out Kaepernick – not signing him because of his political beliefs.

Earlier that NFL season, Kaepernick's protest were revived among pro-athletes, and non-athletes alike. The reason why more people took up the silent protest was in reaction to President Donald Trump's condemnation of NFL players who chose to take the knee during the national anthem.

some people find any protests offensive. Some people only find them offensive if the protests are against something they believe in. I wonder how many who objected to Kaepernick's stance are planning to protest against lockdown in the wake of yesterday's presidential encouragement?

To the OP, you might get more yardage regarding your question on a US site, as has been suggested by jno. This is a British site, and football is played by a bunch of chaps in short pants who go down on their knees, backs, sides, and even back-sides writhing in agony in order to get the attention of the ref. And most people have never heard of a Hail Mary pass.

Possibly because they felt the act before the game was an accusation of them. It has a greater ability to divide, than to reunite. There's a time & place, and all that.

A lot of folk considered taking the knee during the anthem to be offensive to the American flag, and by association, the country and all it represents, particularly the military.

President Trump, as is his way, saw it as a way to stir up the hornet's nest by condemning it as an affront to the veterans of the US military, while simultaneously ignoring those same vets who claimed that peaceful protest was a right for which they fought for in various conflicts through the ages.
