I doubted it initially because you often find that the number inside is so ridiculously small for the road they are on so I assumed that they applied to much slower moving vehicles of the steel box variety. Imagine my surprise when I discovered that they also applied to motorcycles, how daft is that?
Not a public law as such, but one i heard a couple of years ago about a chap at university (one of the posh ones i think in early 2000) who discovered that during lectures (by an old law of the college) he was allowed a tot of sherry that must be supplied to him free of charge by the university. He took advantage of this law for a full term. but eventually the uni got its revenge by removing his sherry allowance because he had not carried his sword across the quadrangle.
There is a lovely site called "we are the English.com"
I quote:-
In Chester a person is permitted to shoot a Welshman with a bow and arrow,as long as he is inside the city walls after midnight.
Scots can still be jailed and whipped for entering England. They face the penalties if they stray into Carlisle,Cumbria, according to the lawbook for the city written in 1561,which has never been revised.
Not so daft laws!!
