What is the name of the railway summit? I reckon that it is somewhere in the Lake District. The clue is -

"one of Britain's greatest railway inclines....this notorious railway summit (916ft), on a line noted for its lack of tunnels and large viaducts."

I think this may be the Settle - Carlisle railway. It's worth checking.

The Beattock Summit is in Cumbria, on the line from Scotland to England, I believe. Could that be it?

The Beattock Summit is on the West Coast Main Line.

The highest point on the Settle-Carlisle is Ais Gill Summit.

This is the longest sustained climb in the country - somewhere around Birmingham I think Good Luck

Shap Summit, on the West Coast Main Line near Tebay, is 916 ft above sea level, and would fit the criteria.

What about the railway up Scaefell on the Isle of Man? It does not have tunnels or viaducts.

Beattock is in Scotland not Cumbria England.
