This is the sort of thing that can happen when as a setter you notice you've used the same word twice in different clues, assume that both times it's there to indicate the abbreviated form (eg male = M), and replace one of the duplicates with a different word (eg for M, 'married').
'Married' here could just about indicate that the Y and the FRONTS are joined together, but if the setter wished the underwear to remain gender neutral he would simply have written the clue as 'Yankee faces supporters'.
