I am a quiz fan but why oh why when contestants are asked questions do they beat around the bush talk about their experiences in life and generally faff around. Why don’t they just answer the question?

I imagine it depends on the format of the show and how they are prompted to behave, you can't do that on a 'buzz in' type of show, you'd get timed out.

The one that Dale Winton used to do before the Lottery on a Saturday night - the people on that used to get on my nerves

"Well, Dale, I don't know the right answer" would be the first words out of their mouths. They would rule out the right answer straight away, then usually plump for the right answer.

There was a woman on The Chase the other day doing something similar, saying "that was a hard one for me, Bradley" - they would have been hard for a lot of people, but you don't hear half the other contestants muttering the same...

Annoys me, too. It's not only the contestants that do it. On Eggheads Pat Gibson always waffles on. Steve is straight to the point.

Dislike it when people say it was before their time. 1066 is before our time but most people still know it.

some formats encourage you to work out the right answer
and think it is user friendly

it is all about getting people to watch it - I watch pointless as Osman is quite interesting. Remember the producer and presenters have to live - - and it is all to do with sales, people watching and bums in seats

Though almost every contestant who takes part annoys me by saying, "Oh, i'm really nervous" when asked how they are.

The worst timewaster of all is Ben from tipping point, he insists on repeating the entire rules EVERY single time and drop. I wish he`d take a leaf from Jeremy Clarkson who say "You know the rules", Yes lets move on.

this is an editorial decision - to cut the waffly bits the ed doesnt rate.

It's blatantly obvious on eggheads that the contestants are encouraged to waffle - it's not A, it's not B, it's C. It makes editing easier as you can cut waffle on a quiz with several "sudden deaths" or leave it in if all rounds are 2-0 victories to end up with a 30-min programme.
