Spineless Leadership Of The Uk
I’ve spent a lot of time in France, Italy and Australia, and I can tell you that those countries would not tolerate mob rule, and demands for the destruction of its history. They’d clamp right down on it very rapidly. Why do the UK government and authorities cave in so pathetically to protesters and allow them to decide on which statues etc stay or go, for example? Give them an inch - which they more than did re the Colston statue in Bristol - and the protestors take a mile. So now we look likely to use memorials to key historical figures because Boris and co show no resistance, no backbone. It’s a dangerous precedent cos the govt aren’t really running this nation now, the mob are. If only we had a leader with the strength and integrity of Churchill and Thatcher....

"o god another white supremacist thread" Do you have a screw loose or something? There is nothing remotely white supremist about this thread just people who have had enough of mob rule and would like democracy restored. Now I know you lefties dislike democracy when it doesnt go you way and anyone right of COB is an extreme right wing person but now you are going...

BLM is a billion dollar industry. Some of you seem to think that removing 6, 60, 600 statues will appease them and they'll disband. Not a chance. Remove every statue and they'll move on to books, films, etc. And then to people. (what will you do? There'll be no police to ring if they have their way)
Vulcan: 'by taking the softly softly approach now, the police are building up much bigger problems for the future.'
I agree with you but feel that on this particular weekend the instruction to the Police to take one for the greater good was the right approach. (I posted an extract from an operational order to that effect some days ago but I can't find it now.)
In terms of a riot it was pretty tame and I saw no disorder that couldn't have been sorted with properly kitted out coppers and a few baton charges.
But that would inevitably have led to allegations of brutality and carefully edited mobile phone footage, backed up by the 'Legal Observers', who were there wearing orange tabards, and inflamed the situation.
I think they should be told that they have had their day(s), the period of grace is over and anyone now committing offences will be arrested, by force if necessary. Let the boys put their babygrows and helmets on, get some prison vans parked up, let the dogs attend and reclaim the streets for all the rest of the public and the legitimate, peaceful protesters who mainly behaved themselves well.
(I was impressed to see some protesters forming a cordon in front of one small group of hard pressed PC's to protect them from the troublemakers until reinforcements arrived.)

In 2018 the local MP, democratically elected by Bristol citizens, asked the local authority to take down the statue. If they had, it would not be at the bottom of Bristol Harbour.
As it is, the statue is to be recovered and placed in a museum, which is what should have happened in the first place//
Gromit.
A petition was held for Bristolians to vote if the statue should be removed because of Colston's past. 56% voted for it to remain. 44% wished it removed. A majority won. That is what I know as democracy.
Illegally ripping the statue down in a fit of wanton vandalism is NOT the democratic way of people who know what it means.

Churchill was a huge failure in his political career, right up to WW2. He'd swapped between all parties up to then. POW in the Boer War. Useless as Home Sec. Useless in WW1. In no-mans land between the wars. His main attribute as PM in WW2 was his callousness. He accepted that people die in war. Lots of them. He accepted that battles would be lost amid huge collateral damage. There were plenty of failures under him in WW2, but the objective was to win the war, and to do that you would lose battles along the way. And get the help of the Yanks. Cos it was them wot wun it yer battleship! Not Churchill. Defiant? Yes. But grateful, very grateful, for the Americans.
