Any that do call should stop once you tell them you are on the list. I am on it and never get any cold calls. You can also register to stop junk mail. Register here http://www.tpsonline.org.uk/tps/
www.tpsonline.org - will remove you for free. To stop yourself getting back on to the lists, you must stop giving out your number on raffle tickets, claiming prizes, bingo scratch-cards etc. etc. They're not usually "cold" calling you, because once upon a time, someone somewhere wrote your telephone number as a contact number (a newspaper or magazine competition for example.) and didn't tick a minuscule "Never Contact Me, Ever, You Bastards" box. Your number then got sold for vast quantities of pies to a calling-centre database list, which then sold the numbers onto individual firms.
I heartily recommend tps as kags and IndieSinger describe. Since I contacted them I have only had about 4 calls and 2 of them were within a week or so of starting. The other two totally panicked when I told them I was listed on tps. The Marketing Manager for one of them rang me back almost immediately to apologise.
