I'm about to try my first knit on circulars and dont understand the following from the pattern!

BASE: With circular needle and 2 strands of yarn,
cast on 48 sts. K 18 rows. Pick up and K10 sts
across first short edge, 48 sts across cast-on
edge, and 10 sts across last short edge – 116 sts.

Can anyone please help?

Have you knitted another piece that has three sides?
Mrs F (who is a guru of all things knitting) asks what it is you are knitting as short edge doesn’t seem to fit with using a circular needle?
It probably means using a circular needle to knit back and forth,
Just like you would on two needles. 116 stitches with two strands of yarn wouldn't fit on two needles, even if you could get some long enough. I'm knitting a blanket atm with over 200 stitches. I wouldn't be able to fit that many stitches in chunky wool on normal needles so knit back and forth with a circular.
I hope this makes sense :)
