I quite like this variant - "Hot as the hinges of Hades"
I must add, I could only manage three quarters of a shift due to the heat. Had I attempted a full 7.5 hours, I would very likely have evaporated!

Speaking of odd sayings, what about "Like a hen on a het girdle"?
I know it as 'Like a hen on a hot brick', very agitated.
29C here on the car clock five minutes ago but I live in a sheltered place (as to the trees around - not the house!). Okay hot - hottest I have ever been in was Kuwait at 51C (very hot - but not as uncomfortable as Muscat at 42C and incredibly humid.....
52C - 'hotter than a stolen Tamale'.....
I use 'batten down the hatches' quite often now Bobbi :o)

My manager always uses the '...like a Sword of Damocles' phrase.
