Am thinking of getting one of the above - will I be safe, will I need to "hear" well especially with the helmet over my head.

No you won't be safe, some scutter and his mates will push you off and steal it
If you are going out in traffic you will need to hear the insults so you can tell them where to go
Define stupid. If it gets you from a to b it's worth a go but get good insurance.
