Two Scam Calls Today.

Both saying the same. "There has been a payment of £600 to an overseas country by your debit or MasterCard 15 minutes ago. If you want to reverse this press one"
I did on the first one, got a foreign women but a high pitched screech over it. So hung up. Didn't bother on the second call just hung up.
A friend said she had four of these yesterday.
Does anyone on here get these type of things.

Why would you press 1 on the first call ? Not a good thing to do. They now know you are a live number who responds to scams

Didn't it used to rack up huge charges on your bill? I'm sure I read somewhere that the scammers got £250 every time someone pressed one.

The ringer on my home phone is always turned off (unless I'm actually expecting a genuine incoming call), so that I don't get any incoming calls unless I'm sitting at my desk and happen to notice the red light flashing. However I dial 1471 every day to see if I've missed anything and then google the numbers that I get that way.

I generally only get about one landline call per month and googling nearly always finds that they're scammers or spammers, with some of them being reported by others as being the type of scam that you refer to. It's certainly a well-known scam, as many websites can tell you.

I've had them. When you press 1 you are transferred to a premium rate line. In future just hang up.

Howver, as has been said, it's never a good idea to 'Press 1' (or whatever) from such an unexpected call.

Had a couple of calls last week from a number in Andover, Hants. It was obviously a marketing call because no-one answered when I said hello.

Also had three emails today puporting to be from Amazon saying there had been unusual activity on my account and I should go to this link to add my correct details. Well, I think that's what they were saying. I could barely understand it because of the poor English. And I don't have an Amazon account anyway.

Yes. The fact that it is a recorded message is a dead giveaway.

I'm with talktalk who I know get a bad press sometimes, but they offer lots of free things like caller display, call safe and last number barring. If someone phones from a withheld number, they are asked to say their name followed by the hash key. I am then given the opportunity to press one and add them to my list or press 2 to accept on this one occasion and so on. Once they are on my list they don't have to say who they are in future calls. If I accept a call and I shouldn't have done, I can then bar that number. Haven't received any scam calls since I've been on this.

A) yes we had a couple last week. When the scammer asked Mrs Allen if she had her laptop handy, she (Mrs A) hung up.

B) Normally, similar to Buenchico, we just leave our answerphone on. Very few scammers leave a message after the beep.

These scammers must get enough gullible people to make it worth their while continuing the scams.
I honestly would have thought there’s enough known about these things these days that people wouldn’t be taken in.
