Helpful or not?
Time they stopped ‘taking the knee’ (ludicrous expression), flying flags and allowing flavour-of-the-month groups to demonstrate but not others. How about remaining neutral, officers, and just getting on with the job?

The second the Police take a political standpoint is the point at which the notion of “policing with consent” is critically and fundamentall y undermined. The principal of consensual policing is that the police are the people and people are the police. It is predicated on the idea that the police represent everyone without showing favour to any one...

Apart from police officers there are men and women from the GRT community who are ---tradesmen,teachers,traders,social workers, youth workers, professors, solicitors, and community
advocates. They are not all 'deadlegs'.
There was a very interesting programme on TV a few years back when it showed GRT children and how they fared at school. Not very well in a lot of the travelling people. They never seemed to stay in any one place for very long. In some of the Gypsy and Roma families there were quite a lot of children eager to learn and wanting to do well at school and some of them had very supportive parents.

//However they know Kent's history with the Gypsy Community better than I do.//
And I probably know more about Kent’s history with the Gypsy Community than they do. In particular I know quite a bit about their illegal activities. In parts of West Kent in particular, around Sidcup, Swanley, Orpington, Edenbridge and Tonbridge, “travellers” live on large permanent settlements with many of the facilities provided by Kent County Council and the adjoining London boroughs of Bexley and Bromley. These so-called travellers live permanently in one place and never travel other than on their daily “business”. Most of them are of Irish descent and many of them have business interests and property in Ireland. Go to any of Kent’s Magistrates’ Courts – especially Maidstone and Sevenoaks - and you will find a large number (disproportionately large) of the defendants will be from this “travelling” community. The allegations against them will be many and various, but usually centre around petty theft and violence coupled with the usual smattering of motoring offences.
//Like any animal, show it kindness and show it you don't mean it harm, and it begins to domesticate. The same thing could be with travellers. Show them you want to work with them, and they may start to be less invasive.
It's surely worth a try. What's the alternative?//
That’s been tried. They see it as a sign of weakness and extract the urine even more. The alternative is to uphold the law without fear or favour as the police are expected to do. The problem is that for some time now (as birdie attests) police officers have been smothered from their induction day with political correctness. No, not all travellers are “at it”. But a disproportionately large number of them are. And that number is increasing because they know that they will not be held to account for their crimes.
The police should not show special support for or empathy with any section of the society they police. They are there to prevent and detect crime, not to become potential criminals’ best friends. As soon as they show support for “causes” for any particular group their impartiality is lost.
The rot set into the UK’s police forces long ago and I fear it will now never be cut out. Regrettably, particularly in rural areas, people now have to make their own arrangements to prevent being turned over or intimidated and this can have disastrous consequences as Tony Martin up in Norfolk discovered a few years ago.
