On people walking into your house on a wet and muddy day, and not making any effort to take their footwear off.

I think it's rude, selfish and ignorant.

I don't bother in my place either. But there again I have doormats.
I would never walk into anybody else's home with muddy shoes, so by the same token, I wouldn't expect them to walk into mine with the same! Just manners.
I would have made sure they wiped their feet if they did not want to remove their shoes!!
If they make a mess, give them a mop/broom to clean it up.
It would never even ccur to me to remove my shoes in someone else's house (unless they were really caked in mud, of course). I'd certainly take extra care to wipe them carefully before proceeding over the threshold but I wouldn't remove them unless specifically asked to.

I was brought up in a house with cold lino on the floor and where my parents and I always wore our outdoor shoes in the house. Nobody was ever expected to remove their shoes upon entering and I can't ever recall anyone else expecting us to remove our footwear when we visited them. I still wear the same footwear indoors and outdoors now too and I regard it as decidely 'odd' to take off shoes indoors.
I think it's rude, selfish and ignorant.
I wouldn't let them in.
