Public Law Essay Help!
hi everyone,
we have been given a 2000 word essay on the topic of diceys doctrine. the question is:
"‘The classic account given by Dicey of the doctrine of the supremacy of Parliament, pure and absolute as it was, can now be seen to be out of place in the modern United Kingdom. Nevertheless, the supremacy of Parliament is still the general principle of our constitution.’ (Lord Steyn, R (Jackson) v Attorney General [2005] UKHL 56, para. 102).
Discuss the above statement with reference to contemporary challenges to the doctrine of parliamentary sovereignty.
so my concern here is, i dont understand the question properly. i understand the topic is the diceys doctrine and how the modern legal system is challenging it. but i do not understand why has he quoted from the case. do we need to say something about the case as well? it will be very helpful if someone gives me some tips on how to write, on what topic to write on and if possible recommendation to any research journals or study materials which will help me in finishing this 2000 words long essay!
thank you everyone, have a nice day!

this cant possibly be your first law essay
Yes you have to read that case -
THEN you need to collect via a search cases which have come after it (So Denning discussing it in 1973 may NOT help) - your search engine may tell you which future cases have cited it
( cited by.....)
BAILII doesnt
Miller is the only one I can think of
SO you get your search list
read them all - annotate them ( digest and think )
extract the ratio decidendi ) which is the point of this exercise
and then compare to the quoted case
what you write on - you have been given it
research journals and study materials - only english case reports - Lexis I think does do law reviews as well
not good luck - just read the reports and do it! start today
stop when you get to word 2000 stop
by then you will have formed an opinion which you argue in the final paragraph which may be longish
Have done European law? There is a recent Denmark case which discussed this from a European point of view but the question is DEFFO english law and you should use english cases
