"Man Of The World"
Shall I tell you about my life
They say I'm a man of the world
I've flown across every tide
And I've seen lots of pretty girls
I guess I've got everything I need
I would't ask for more
And there's no one I'd rather be
But I just wish that I'd never been born
[Break]
And I need a good woman
To make me feel like a good man should
I don't say I'm a good man
Oh, but I would be if I could
I could tell you about my life
And keep you amused I'm sure
About all the times I've cried
And how I don't want to be sad anymore
And how I wish I was in love
"Man Of The World"
Shall I tell you about my life
They say I'm a man of the world
I've flown across every tide
And I've seen lots of pretty girls
I guess I've got everything I need
I would't ask for more
And there's no one I'd rather be
But I just wish that I'd never been born
[Break]
And I need a good woman
To make me feel like a good man should
I don't say I'm a good man
Oh, but I would be if I could
I could tell you about my life
And keep you amused I'm sure
About all the times I've cried
And how I don't want to be sad anymore
And how I wish I was in love
What a sad coincidence.
I have been clearing out my garage and unearthed a box of cassette tapes of my interviews - I kept almost everything, and one of them was my interview with Peter Green for a guitar magazine in America, when he made is 'comeback' in the 80's.
I saw one of his earliest comeback shows, and interviewed him afterwards. He was incredibly modest, refusing to have any truck with the notion that he was any kind of musical talent, he simply laughed it off, quite genuinely it was clear.
His manager told me that he was still very fragile, and needed constant looking after. I remember him asking her if it was Ok to sign a couple of CD's for me, and she told me afterwards that he is forbidden to sign anything without asking, to avoid unscrupulous people doing him any more damage.
Similarly, as soon as he came off stage, the tour manager was there to take his vintage Les Paul and pack it away. If anyone said it was a nice guitar, he would have simply handed it over as a gift, he had no concept of value whatsoever - either for his instruments, his money, or his talent.
During the interview, Peter explained the actual situation that led the papers to report that he had threatened his accountant with a shotgun.
The reality was, he did argue with his accountant, and as he left the office, the accountant called the police. Peter was stopped by the police when he got to his car, they searched his car and found an air rifle in the boot and he was arrested. A little less exciting that the papers' reports that he had brandished the gun and threatened to shoot the accountant - but why let the truth get in the way of a good story.
I shall replay my tape tonight, and mourn the passing of a sweet man and an amazing guitarist. I shall remember that when I told him that on the night a girlfriend finished with me and I went home and played Man Of The World and cried my eyes out, he simply smiled warmly at me. I am sure he had heard that story many many times, but he was simply too polite, too kind and too sweet to say anything.
What a tragic loss to music.
