Weddings - Am I Alone?

Just reading through the news and comments about cancelled weddings, etc.

Am I alone in disliking weddings. Not marriages, but 'weddings' and receptions and all the paraphernalia that goes with them. I find eloping quite romantic! We try to find excuses to not attend weddings unless of course, it's close family.

Bazile, I don't disagree with you. But traditional weddings like you describe have now gone way over the top and the whole meaning of getting married has been lost. It doesn't have to cost a fortune.

well if feeling like a princess means having your free time limited, your whole day scheduled, having to get up early, work all day and go to bed late, having the paps around waiting for you to screw up and generally having to be on best behaviour then I guess they get that alright!
I hated going to weddings when I was younger. They were big affairs set in big halls with around 200 guests. Most were distant cousins and people I didn't know. I very rarely get invited these days unless its very close family.
We had a very quiet wedding with only 6 guests who were close family. We then had a 3 course meal at a beautiful restaurant and then back to our cottage for a champagne toast.

I wouldn't have changed a thing.
I hate going to weddings feeling all trussed up like a turkey and having to make small talk with strangers, just so someone can feel like a princess for the day.

Mine was a registry office do. I bought a nice dress and shoes. Close family only. Back to ours with nibbles and the champagne we’d received as gifts.
We were just going to have a quiet wedding but ended up with a big party. It wasn't expensive tho because I did a lot myself and shopped around. It was a great day which wasn't too formal.

I was really looking forwards to my brothers this year which he was having at my parents which is a great party place but it was cancelled.
As long as it's someone else's, I've nowt against weddings. Just don't see the point of marriage, but if you fancy being in one, knock yourself out.

Sounds good Barmaid. My son got married late morning in a registry office, had no reception then had a bring a bottle party in the evening in a village hall . He of course provided drinks. Food paid for by us instead of a wedding present. We all had a good time.
Ours cost seven and six, reception in the pub, guests me mum and Tom the window cleaner (he came in his car with ladders on the roofrack). Honeymoon a daytrip to Dover Castle.

50 years ago, and still happy together.

A proper wedding.
Apc, last hug I will get for a while! Not had one since before lockdown and back to no hugs again now as DIL is a nurse at local hospital and my son has just been visiting me in my garden for last few weeks.
Not vulnerable health wise just age wise.
They've had a lovely couple of days at the hotel. Walking on the beach at midnight and local cliff walks during the day. We've just chatted for the last hour.
A smallish one here, civil ceremony in a nice hotel, 27 guests, beautiful meal, amazing flowers. Very much my only real indulgence finish at 21.30 for a real ale pub crawl. Me in my frock they wouldn't let me get in the fountain. One floozy in the jacuzzi was plenty( Brummies will know where I mean). So happy and Dave had the best time we laughed our way though it
All depends on what sort of invitation I get. If it's for the entire ceremony and 'afters', then I usually accept. If it's just for the 'evening do', then I feel like an afterthought and I always decline.
Bazile, my quiet wedding was the most important day of my life.

Barry, so was mine. The important thing was that we had made that commitment.

And I didn't feel like a princess in my purple flared trousers and 70s purple platform boots! 48 years ago.
