What Food Takes You Right Back To Your Childhood?

For me it is jelly and blancmange in a waxed paper dish, usually patterned with clowns. It appeared at every children's birthday party and the school's Christmas party. If we were lucky there was a bit of ice cream, too.

When I worked at the drop in, we had a lot of Frey Bentos donated. My boss would only put 1/3 of a pie on the plate. I was horrified, considering we had so many of the damn things.
When I took over, they got more.

As I said before, meat was rationed. You had your allowance for the week (not a lot) and that was it.

Pasta , From what I gathered from my grandma's family, some who had butchers shops, although the meat was rationed you still had a choice, but only the well off could afford to pay for the more expensive cuts -can you imagine a miner being able to pay for fillet steak? So tripe, offal and the tougher cuts were bought by less well off customers who could stretch these cuts to feed a family.

Pasta, fish was never rationed. My gran kept chickens and rabbits in her tiny back yard for food and so did her neighbours. Many people kept pigs in their yards, too. Game was never rationed so anyone who could bagged themselves rabbit, hare, pigeon. Poaching was rife in the country.
A lot of meat was preserved and sent to the service men and women. Tons of meat products were sent every day to keep the army marching.
