does anyone know how to connect to the internet on a laptop when we are in america on holiday

I was in Florida during March and many hotels advertised free wireless internet access.I didn't take my laptop as it really wasn't necessary there were plenty of free computers in the lobby.

If you use dial up, you'll need an ISP with nodes in the US so you can dial a local number, otherwise you'll be expensively phoning international back to the UK. If you have wireless then many hotels have offer wireless access, so you'll need an account with a supplier.

Alternatively, leave the lap top at home and do what I do, use internet terminals in hotels & internet cafes. Many hotels offer free internet PCs in their business room, or charge a nominal amount.

If you take your laptop remember to take adaptor for your charger and ensure you have a US phone plug for dial up. You'll also be hassled by airport security in the US

I stayed in a US hotel which had a RJ45 patch cable that allowed you to plug into their broadband internet via an ethernet port. You then payed so much an hour for the connection (just set up the internet connection as if you were using a LAN with no proxy). There again, they had internet access through the TV which is what I ended up using.
