Quite right. Any thoughts on the number of minutes he'd remain alive if he ever walked free and wasn't given a new identity?
Jim's right. Chapman would be dead withing a fortnight if he was released.
Let him die incarcerated. R.I.P. John.
So , it would make a difference if it wasn't JL - why ?
Plebslaughter and celebslaughter are two very different things, Bazile.

It may arise from the mindset of some folk being considered more worthy of respect and adoration that's a hangover from feudal times, cap doffing and all that.

It could be that he was part of a thing that changed the world, for good or ill, and deserves a small degree of reverence.

It could be that the release of killer is wrong and this case has it right.

I'm content to see him wither and die in prison.
Chapman would most likely be walking amongst us now were he British and sentenced in a British court. Along with a new identity and a new life, of course. We mock the Americans for many things but never the sentences their courts hand down.
Agree with Douglas's last sentence. John was the oldest Beatle, had he lived, he would have been 80 in October.
Ah right , so JL life is considered more worthy than A N Other , from Hemel Hempstead
It was ever so, Bazile.

I'm not sure what answer you're waiting for.
Ringo was the oldest Beatle, he turned 80 in July
Yes, sorry I got that wrong.

The So Rule rides again!

No-one has said that Mr Lennon's life is worth more or less than a non-famous person.

Douglas has hinted that such a concept may be behind the sentencing, but neither he, or anyone else, has actually said so.

The OP ponders if Mr Chapman would have been released by now had he been sentenced by a British court, and that is certainly possible, but of course, it's a question no-one can actually answer definitively, so thoughts can, and are, being offered.

I think you may have a point.

Sometimes a crime is of such seismic impact that it may need to be reflected in the punishment delivered, and its ongoing review as time passes.

We cannot know if that is the case, but it is an interesting notion none the less.
A waste of money keeping him alive all those years. Should have had the electric chair. Bring back capital punishment
Life should mean life, not 20 years and possibly be out in 10.
