Why cannot the same principle used for wind up or kinetic Watches be adapted for modes of eco friendly transport.?

I seem to remember this being discussed in some kids environmental programme. It takes a lot of arm swinging to keep the tiny mechanism in your watch going. So to keep a couple of tons of car moving would be pretty impossible.
