You're fortunate that you generally have bins in the UK, even if the collection service can be problematic sometimes. We moved to Spain from France a couple of years ago. When we arrived, we were horrified to find that they appear to rely exclusively on communal bins. (Perhaps other parts of Spain do have individual bins, but certainly not here.) Our 'urbanisation' of about 100 largish properties has a single point for rubbish (& recycling) that's about 250 yards from our house and much further from others. It's also at the bottom of a steep hill, which makes walking there problematic. Of course, this considerably reduces our local charges, but it's certainly an issue we'd overlooked. Certainly, anyone thinking of moving to Spain should take this into account in their choice of a property.
When we were in France, we had individual rubbish collection with bar-coded bins and got charged according to the size of the bin & how many times we put it out, though not how full it was. (There was also a standing charge.) For apartments, there were large 'smart' bins that you accessed with a smart card to charge you by the load. I couldn't say how common the system was as it was only introduced in our area a couple of years before we left.
