For doing something as low value as presenting a show, one ought not be given astronomical sums, or be in a position to take astronomical pay drops. Folk doing more useful jobs can't even dream of being paid so much. High time a dose of realism hit the industry.
And no, I'm not unaware that other areas are also unjustifiably and immorally overpaid.
Entertainment seems to be one big gravy train for those lucky enough to either favoured and selected to star, or who are running the industry.

I always find it wryly amusing how it's only ever other people who earn too much money, and how people aren't "worth" or "deserve" the money they're being paid.
Like it or not, if the BBC didn't pay these sums, then the people concerned would work elsewhere; some people may not like the people who are earning those amounts, but that's purely subjective and there will be plenty of people who do like them.
"What do the rest of you think?" [about these people paying for the TV licences of the old and redundant]. It's a stupid idea is what I think; how many TV licences should each of them pay? 10 each? 20, 50, 100, 1,000 or until they've run out of money to sate those who think they earn too much?
"A 90% pay cut would still be generous.
They don't live in the real world."
If you're seriously suggesting reducing Fiona Bruce's salary to £45k is still "generous", you're the one who doesn't live in the real world.
Like it or not, if the BBC didn't pay these sums, then the people concerned would work elsewhere; some people may not like the people who are earning those amounts, but that's purely subjective and there will be plenty of people who do like them.

And that I think is the crux of the issue. Many of these people would not get that sort of money because their views and the way they act would not generate the advertising revenue.
IMHO the BBC should not be competitive, it should not run reality shows and the like but be there as an impartial broadcaster and cater for the more niche subjects. Doing this removes the need for such high salaries paid from a tax.
Alternatively dump the tv tax and let the BBC do what it likes.

Please smile when I tell you that a lot of the so called celebrities on the BBC work elsewhere whilst in employment with the BBC. Graham Norton is an example as, in addition to his earnings from the BBC, is paid, by his own Production Company, two million pounds a year for his chat show. Incidentally, the show is distributed by .. ITV Studios Global Entertainment.
