Today's Alphapuzzle cryptic clue seems a bit more interesting than yesterday's.

I think it "is" "symbol" rather than cymbal as "cymbal" is the homophone" "drummers kit, say" in the clue, and "symbol" IS the sign.

Y is a given letter & there's one in the correct position. Unfortunately, it doesn't help distinguish between the two. Normally, the correct answer should be symbol, as JJ says, but sometimes an Alphapuzzle setter turns the rules on their head. I'll do the puzzle & provide the answer.

It's definitely symbol. There's a clue elsewhere in the puzzle where the first letter of the answer is doubled, and CC couldn't fit but SS does.
