You would be surprised.....drive through it.....a lovely county with attractive houses many built with that "grey stone."

I moved from Essex to there. Not through choice cause I was reluctantly moving but as a place to move to it is lovely

My home county of Gloucestershire also borders eight counties.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gloucestershire confirms Gloucestershire borders Herefordshire, Worcestershire, Warwickshire, Oxfordshire, Wiltshire, Bristol, Somersetand and Monmouthshire. Monmouthshire is a Welsh county, but I'd argue the question's a bit ambiguous on this point :o)

There have been a number of boundary changes over the years, and the "historic counties" definition removes Bristol but adds Berkshire. This is shown quite well here http://wikishire.co.uk/map/#/centre=51.785,-2.124/zoom=10

However the "historic counties" definition adds a ninth county to Northamptonshire. This is Huntingdonshire which is now part of Cambridgeshire. See - http://wikishire.co.uk/map/#/centre=52.332,-0.702/zoom=10
2 Counties share the distinction of having the largest number of counties bordering them -

A)Northamptonshire
&
B)Cambridgeshire

A) For Northamptonshire:

- Warwickshire
- Leicestershire
- Rutland
- Lincolnshire
- Cambridgeshire
- Bedfordshire
- Buckinghamshire
- Oxfordshire

B) For Cambridgeshire:

- Rutland
- Lincolnshire
- Norfolk
- Suffolk
- Essex
- Hertfordshire
- Bedfordshire
-Northamptonshire

Lincs and Norths both have 8 (Lincs: East Riding, South Y, Nottinghamshire, Leicestershire, Rutland, Northamps, Cambridge and Norfolk) (Norths: Lincs, Leicestershire, Rutland, Cambridgeshire, Befordshire, Bucks, Warwickshire and Oxfordshire.) although Cambridge also has 8.
