I recently received a cheque for incapacity benifit and it is crossed does this mean pay only in to my account or can I pay it in too someone elses account

Crossed cheques must be paid into your own account.

If you haven't got a bank account send it back and ask for one payable at your local post office - be sure to name it as they have a habit of making them out for one local to their office rather than you if it is not specified.

I am not sure. I think the legislation was changed some years ago. I know that some people will cash cheques but charge a lot to do so. So it seems they can be paid into another account. Ask at the Bank.
If you do not have a bank account, try to open one. But it might not be agood idea to tell them you are on incapacity benefit, as they might not open the account. They will think they cannot make any money out of you! You will need two documentary proofs of identity, e.g. birth certificate/driver's licence.
