got vhs recorder wheni press play to play a video it only plays for about 5 seconds then swithes off no prob recording tv progs to hdd thank u

Try cleaning the heads or making sure the sensor is not blocked

Have you tried more than 1 video tape? It could be a problem with one particular cassette.
Another thing to try is winding the tape from beginning to end and back again before trying to play it. Tape can get stuck to itself after a time and fully winding and rewinding it might do the trick.

You can get "wet" cleaning cassettes, which clean the spindles and rollers as well as the heads.
