Very grateful for all help with these clues please.
23ac: “Oily stuff’s running to the left of me (6).”
54ac: “Look for a bite in the end to eat bagel (5).”
I abandoned this last night but decided to have another go this evening and I have finished it! Well in the sense that I have an answer to every clue and each answer fits at least part of the clue. But often there’s bits I don’t get but I shall leave them and keep my fingers crossed! Except one. I can’t think of any alternative to fit the letters I have but I have no idea why it might be correct. The clue is : one who’s sore maybe after kicking small log over. (2-5) With the letters I have “ re-enter” fits and I can’t think of any alternative. But why?

Thanks cashier. That gives me part of the reason ( so it joins the several others where part understanding is enough to get the answer onto the grid) but I still don’t get the “ log over” .

To be fair Steven, I couldn't parse a lot of them either. Like you I could get half but not all of quite a few clues. Finished it but can't say I enjoyed it.
Ah!! Bless you Mamyalynne! I don’t know enough Britishisms let alone Americanises. Maybe that’s the reason I can only figure out part of all the others.

Oh, and thank you cashier! It helps my self esteem when really good puzzlers like you experience difficulties!
Did my conceit no harm though. I’ve been doing pretty well in recent weeks and I needed a week like this one to bring me back to earth!
Your absence was noted and well done to you Steven for coming on so well, I don't like them sneaking Americanisms in much but guess they try to keep us guessing.
