watching the documentary series "The Movies" - Spielberg - talking about Raging Bull - " When he designed the movie, Marty, purposely, didn't put a clutch on the film, there's no clutch" - googled, can't find what a "clutch" is in this context. Any ideas?

Without seeing the documentary and getting the dialogue context I would assume that it is an Americanism for a great moment at the right time. Could be wrong though. Perhaps he meant that there was no old bag. We could have helped there I'm sure. (^_*)

I owe you a Ta for a BA. I missed it and it was too late as the thread went dead. So Ta, TTT.

it's near the start of Ep7 when they are talking about raging bull, what I wrote above is word for word.
Reading a little more of this passage he seems to be saying there's no let up - he could almost have used the word 'brake' instead.

same as in cars, it doesn't go up and down through the gears, it's in top gear all the way
I have heard it described as having no middle gears....its an odd analogy from an american though as most of their cars are automatic.
Is it something like the waffle before the film titles? Or the 20 minutes of Bond when you forget the titles haven't been on yet.
i thought it might be 'pacing'
lack of control of the pace - and yes Brake would be an alternative

or he thought it was affected tripe and he could have made a better one - in fact he will go out and do it - right now
// it is an Americanism for a great moment at the right time.//

there has to be one at minute 25 apparently

( the expensive co star croaks, that sort of thing)
