On BBC news the reporter is stood in front of what looks like a metal bridge by the Tyne that doesn't seem to go anywhere - is that really the case?

The other end is probably obscured by the fog on the Tyne...
The 'walkway to nowhere' perhaps?

Could be, lankeela. Reporters are often sent out to stand in front of tenuously applicable places. Like a tennis player testing positive for drugs so they send a reporter to stand by the Wimbledon gates to give their piece, even though Wimbledon wasn’t on at the time.

Or a car manufacturer has to recall some vehicles so some person has to report from outside a dealership of the said car manufacturer. Even though it’s nothing to do with that dealership.
Can't say I've seen that Chris but I've walked over the Tyne Bridge many times and it's always taken me 'somewhere'
The Tyne Bridge is part of the A167

Good grief...doesn't look like it goes anywhere!
I think I know the picture you're talking about; it looks a bit like one end of a crane. Not knowing newcastle I can't be any more help than that. Is that possible; if so someone familiar with Newcastle might have an idea what it really is.
APG - that's the thing I had in mind. I could only see one end of it but it looked like a structure for lifting things.

Yes that's it - the Transporter Bridge - it just looked very strange from the angle the reporter was standing at - reminded me of an episode of Auf Weidersen Pet where they were carrying out a scam.
Yes lankeela I remember that -they tried to sell it to span the grand canyon!
