On BBC news the reporter is stood in front of what looks like a metal bridge by the Tyne that doesn't seem to go anywhere - is that really the case?

Could be, lankeela. Reporters are often sent out to stand in front of tenuously applicable places. Like a tennis player testing positive for drugs so they send a reporter to stand by the Wimbledon gates to give their piece, even though Wimbledon wasn’t on at the time.
Or a car manufacturer has to recall some vehicles so some person has to report from outside a dealership of the said car manufacturer. Even though it’s nothing to do with that dealership.

The Tyne Bridge is part of the A167
