And how muncher does it differ throughout the UK, LIKE Zn.Ireland , Scotland and Wales as well as England, how different is it in the North to the South for example?
Like APG has said in Tiggs thread, up here it was customary to go outside ( or a member of the household) take with them a piece of coal and a drink, knock on the door at 12 midnight to be admitted by preferably a tall man with dark hair ( not sure why)
Christmas Eve, house cleaned from top to bottom, plenty of fruit it bowls, Turkey and other meats cooking in the oven and always new PJs and slippers

I used to go and 'first foot' with my dad, to one of our neighbours (They also worked together) on NYE. I don't remember new PJ's and slippers on Christmas Eve though. As. I live alone (An don't drink) I just do C.E. and N.Y.E. as a normal day of the week.
I've just posted this link on another thread but it seems to fit well here too:

Furniture throwing, anyone?

;-)
Traditionally I tend to have an alcoholic drink of some sort.
If responsible for the next day's lunch, probably get some pre-preparation done too.
PS: I've been first footing on New Year's Eve. It was many years ago when my parents lived next door to a Scottish couple and their children, so I called at their front door (complete with the requisite lump of coal) straight after midnight. They invited me in and insisted that my parents joined us too.

It was a lovely (and VERY long) night, with my father and I getting through a bottle and a half of the neighbours' whisky! Not a bad exchange for a lump of coal, I think ;-)
I still have the first footing piece of coal my Dad would bring in, one of my favourite possessions.

Question Author
That's what I meant for this thread , how traditions change in different parts of the country ,for example Hogmanay used to go on well into NYD as I remember through a couple of Scottish friends I have ,yet here,it finishes when the revellers go to bed
i used to go down to the Mansion house on New Years day to watch the parade.
Lord Mayor's parade highlight of the year, not to mention once going to the street party on NYE down by the Thames, never again
Question Author
Now that's something I'm unfamiliar with Emmie , I can never remember a parade here on NYD , only on Remembrance Sunday
Christmas day, eat and drink too much as our lord instructed, new year, watch Only An Excuse, Jools Holland then over to next door for a swally and a game of out of focus poker.
