I've completed the puzzle but unsure of some links to the theme.

I have PRAE?OM?N for 1ac. which can only have one solution but I don't see an anagram for it.

For the following 15ac. ?ART?I?N, 28ac. ?H?RE and 24dn ME?TA?I?M I have answers which all have anagrams as per the theme but I don't see where the extra words come from.

Any hints?

1ac starts POM...
15a (you're showing too many letters, greyfox) extra is in 27d but you might have used the wrong anagram indicator - the anagrind means 'drunk'.
24d the extra is in 39a.
28a - I can only see the superfluous word in 8d - not an 'extra' as such - and it gives an obscure alt. spelling for 'dune' (but it's not very satisfactory and there are two possible entries to consider in that place - a very disappointing conclusion if there's nothing better).
