Small screen - why?

Sometime today, i must have done something to change the way my desktop looks when i open an icon. Instead of filling the whole screen, it only half fills it, yet when i click on the maximise box up the top, i am left with bands of white down both sides of the now large screen. What have i done?

Have you tried hovering your cursor over a corner of the screen and dragging it to full size?
