tongue biting in sleep
2 Answers
over the last 12 months or so, i keep waking in the night because i am biting my tongue in my sleep, like chewing on the side of it, quite hard. does anyone else do this and if they do, do they know why? its a bit of a pain (scuse the pun), cos i have terrible trouble actually getting to sleep, so could really do without this!

So it may be a mild case of this if you are not having major fits. Or just be the same as people that grind there teeth and the more you think about it the more youll do it in your sleep. You say its just the last year, have you been stressed out as lack of sleep will cause you to do weird things in your sleep.
Hi mandimoo. A couple of years ago I had to have an operation on my tongue to remove a lump. This had apparently happened due to what the surgeon said was 'trauma' caused by biting on my tongue during the night. (I also have a tendency to grind my teeth.) I have no idea why I do this but have often woken up with my tongue clamped firmly between my teeth =0/
In a bid to stop this happening I now have a gum shield to wear overnight. It's quite slim and made of a clear material that just slips over my bottom teeth so I don't quite look like a forward from the local rugby squad ( I hope) Although wearing it during the night was a bit weird at first it didn't take long to adjust and it has helped tremendously. My husband says that I don't so much grind now as squeak lol.
Maybe its worth asking your doc / dentist to be referred on to a specialist to have a shield made. Having mine has really helped.
