We did a surprise party for my Dad in July who is a massive Beatles fan and always wants to buy (expensive) Beatles memorabilia. He likes his whiskey and being a bloke no one knows what to buy him so every birthday he ends up with about 30 bottles of whiskey! So when we sent out the invitations, we wrote that as some people would like to get Dad a present and don't know what to buy, we'd have a box at the party for them to put in cards and money if they wish. People knew that we weren't outrightly asking them to give money, it was just an option - and everyone thought it was a brilliant idea as it saves them worrying about what to buy. Also, it gives people the option to put it in a card or even just drop the money in on it own if they don't know how much to put in. My boyfriends an artist and made the box out of polyboard with a picture of my Dad on it and my Dad had over 700 at the end of the night. Hope that helps and have a nice wedding! :)
How about you just be abit more gracious and grateful for whatever anyone gets you rather than being so mercinary? To hand money over makes "keeping up with the Joneses" syndrome even worse than just giving a gift....if your that well off for things why not suggest everyone gives the gift to a charity who can then sell or raffle it and then it goes to someone who'll appreciate it then?

He just likes picking fights don't you sft! :-)
The box idea sounds good also remember to ask everyone to put their gift in a blank envelope (no sender's name required) and promise not to open the box until everyone's left the party/wedding - that way they can do it anonymously and no "keeping up with the joneses" feelings should arise!

This can be very dangerous; relatives have just done this and most guests are furious, some refusing to attend the wedding. It is one thing to suggest "something for the cellar/garden" or name a particular store for gift vouchers, but telling people to give you money for a holiday because you have everything you want...... Your question indicates that you already doubt the wisdom of this idea.
