We have been offered a few ponies, since Matty died, from friends... but all were quite young and needed more fun and proper exercise. I have now been offered this Welsh Mountain pony, free.... he is 16, has done Prince Philip Cup ,pony club etc is very experienced and is pretty much retired. Basically, he needs a permanent retirement home, but would also be fine with my young granddaughter learning with him. I also have a grandson due in April...
But he is now unwanted by previous people, who want him to just go anywhere else...
Looks like he will be moving in next week x

16 is very young to retire a Welsh - my old boy (Section D cross) went on till he was 34 and was still lightly ridden until he was in his thirties. I am sure he will make a super schoolmaster for your young 'uns and I bet he can still have lots of fun.

I know absolutely nothing about horses or horse ownership or horse people.
Are horses treated like pets? Or are they viewed differently, even by very kind and responsible owners?

How lovely.....I have just been on an FB thread where a woman has been sold a pony who has turned out to be unsuitable for her daughter because of his CHANGED behaviour since he was delivered. Pretty much all the advice has been around how to get her money back or move the pony on and almost nothing about why the change and whether he is ill or in pain or just plain scared :(

Vagus sadly yes....even some people who think of themselves as "good" owners will sell a pony on when the child outgrows him or her or when they are no longer needed. When my niece was a child she had a pony and when she outgrew him, he stayed on with the family for the rest of his life. When a goat and a sheep were dumped in his field, they just took them on too. My sis and her husband weren't great St Francis types but they would never have considered getting shut of a family pet because they had no more use for them.

Poor thing being unwanted by his previous owners, he could have been sent anywhere, so thank goodness he found someone who cares. Long, happy life horsey xx

I'm certain he'll have a lovely, long life with you pixie. I shudder to think what might have happened to him otherwise. Such a shame as he's obviously got a good long life still ahead of him.
