Sudan, the last white rhino on Earth, being comforted by one of his carers, just before he died.

Heartbreaking on so many levels.

I don't know why but I feel sadder about the plight of animals on TV than the suffering children.

In particular the donkey with a twisted ankle.

A peaceful passing with those who care at your side, if only that could be afforded to all.
During the space of my lifetime (& maybe yours too) the world's population of wild animals has halved - a frightening statistic.
and will continue to decline Khandro, as the population grows, more land is needed to house them

Canary, 'just saying'.

Is there really a distinction between the suffering of one creature and another?

Feel for them both. Otherwise, you are on a very slippery slope, which says that not only are some species more worthy of your compassion than others, but that even some of OUR species are more worthy ... or less so.

Heart warming, knowing his carers were with him, comforting in his final moments.
if poachers didn't hunt them he wouldn't have been the last of his kind
no they wouldn;t, sadly they are the poor ones usually, the money that is made from rhino horn is huge.
Allen, // but that even some of OUR species are more worthy ... or less so.//

I for one wouldn't cry over the death of a Terrorist -of any colour or creed.
its those that buys medicines containing rhino horn, like those in China should be condemned. But that won't happen. Nor will the hunting of whales, or the killing of Elephants, money money money
What has that got to do with the photo in the OP? the photo of an animal, obviously well cared for, dying a natural death comforted by its keeper?
if some of mankind weren't so stupid, greedy we wouldn't need to keep animals like that in captivity, so one dies a natural death, most don't.
just to be clear, there are thousands of southern white rhinos left, though they too were thought to be extinct some time back. And white doesn't mean they're white.

They are threatened, though.
jno they are, like many wild animals, habitat loss, due mostly to man's inability to get along with and protect them, money to be made from Rhino horn, whale meat, Ivory from elephants, the list is endless
the last time I was in Africa (a few years ago now) they were cutting off rhinos' horns to make them valueless to poachers.
shame that has to happen jno
Canary start your own thread about starving children. This one is about a beautiful white rhino and his heart broken carer.

Just saying.
