What are the current cheapest Pay As You Go rates, no contract, no monthly fee, no internet, just calls and texts? It’s quite hard wading through all the guff!
1pMobile, as per my link above, us the cheapest option if you only use your phone occasionally. (i.e. f the number of minutes you'll use on outgoing calls each month plus the number of texts you'll send in that time doesn't exceed a total of 500).
I pay £6/month for sim only to GiffGaff (they use 02) which gets me unlimited minutes and texts, a small amount of data, no contract just pay monthly or don't if you want to stop.
I pay £14 a month with O2.....there's a message in this in that I went into contract with a new Galaxy.
After a year, I was flush and bought the phone out. 2 things resulted. I had been paying the finance plus 23 quid a month for the airtime - out of the finance, they dropped me to 14 quid for exactly the same airtime and data....so they had been ripping me off at £9 a month - before the finance package. Secondly, they tried charging me for insurance.....as I pointed out, the phone out of contract was covered by my home insurance. Their shop guy had a huge barney with head office in front of me, pointing out what they were intending/had been doing was illegal. He got me a credit back for 3 months worth of the so-called premium.
>>> Let's say, as an example, that you make 5 outgoing calls, each of 3 minutes duration each week and also send 5 texts during that time. That would cost you 20p per week with 1pMobile, so only adding up to around £1 per month.
I bought a cheap mobile from Argos, put the accompanying SIM card in, and now get all incoming calls. As I've not registered with the SIM card provider, I can't make outgoing calls, but I pay nothing. This suits me as I only wanted it for receiving second-level-security codes from banks etc. when working online, I'm not interested in making outgoing calls. How long this will last I've no idea, been OK for a couple of months so far.
Currently I’m on an O2 ‘classic payg’, 3p per min calls, 2p texts, no contract, as long as I lob in a certain sum (I think it’s £10 every 3 months), but there are rumours that O2 are dropping this cheapo deal, hence my question.
Karl, 1p require you to top up at least £10 every 4 months
"Requirements
To keep your account and SIM active, just make at least one £10 top-up every 120 days."
£2.50 a month wasted if you only use the phone occasionally

The 'no longer available to new customers' O2 Classic PAYG has no requirement for regular top-ups. The minimum top-up is £10 but the SIM will not expire provided you make a chargeable activity within a 6-month period, e.g. a 2p text every 6 months is enough to keep the account live.
Having said that, Aberrant, Ilooked into it a bit further, and it seem O2 have no commitment to users like me. And why should they? It’s monthly contracts they want, not oiks like me who sometimes spend a quid, sometimes £20.
I’ll hang in there for the time, all fingers crossed.
