FAO AB ED : Quoting posts
14 Answers
Hi Ab Ed. I have noticed on other sites that you can hit a quote button beside someone's post to include it in your post (Puts it in a little box) if you want to make a reference to it and wondered if this would be possible here on AB. Sometimes when threads run on forever , references to the original question can sometimes get lost , or someone may post a valid point which gets swamped in the rest of the answers and lost and I feel that having the option to refer back to certain posts would be useful in helping others keep track of valid points and to keep a natural flow of the answers. What do you think ?

I think that It makes it much easier to keep up with what people are saying. Sometimes I come in late to a post and think Eh , what ??? As you know yourself , on here the original question usually gets lost and people start referring back to points others have made but when there have been several in between the person typing the post it can be misleading. That probably accounts for some of the arguments on here when people start squabbling over comments which weren't even meant for them and they take it the wrong way. At least if you can quote the source then it scrolls much easier and everyone gets the point.

yep it's a great idea, I'm a member of a Tropical Fish forum (yes I know I'm a geek!) and this is used to great effect, especially when you need someone to clarify a point they've previously made.
Mind you, just because it's a good idea, you needn't think you're nicking the Fondant Fancies from under me snout!

Oh Boo , don't you know that I ALWAYS get the chocolate ones ? Oh and the lemon ones. Come to think of it , the pink ones are quite nice too. You'll have to be quick to catch me !!!!
Jno - Can things get much worse than they are already on here though ? At least this way we would be able to actually see who said what and keep some kind of track of the conversation. People do quote what others have said anyway but this saves time in having to actually type it all out (Or copy and paste). One click of a button and you could use the quote instantly. I wasn't meaning having one solitary post with lots of different quotes which runs continuously though , more like this :
AB user 1s post : I like chips
Ab user 2s post : [I like chips posted by AB user 1 ]
No potatoes are healthier.
So you are only using one quote in your answer at any given time and everyone can see the point which you are referring to. At the moment it's a free for all on some of the posts with everyone diving in and this is what sometimes leads to people misreading posts as being directed at them. It also helps people avoid the chat if they wish and keep to the original question and let's face it , with 100-200 + answer questions , scrolling fingers are required anyway. This helps separate the chat from the answers to the question.
