Spot on , I always have a large gap between me and the vehicle in front. I slow a little and let them in. The tailgaters cause most problems.

I still get the cold shivers about being on the A19, my late OH pulled into the middle lane to allow the traffic coming down the slip road to join only to have some idiot pull onto the carriageway but continue into the middle lane. But for his prompt action there would have been a very nasty prang, I can still remember the look of shock and surprise on the face of the other driver, she clearly hadn't bothered to check the middle lane.

doug, that's exactly what I said. I'm talking about the rissoles on the carraigeway who do not let you merge, they speed up and slow daown to match you so you can't merge properly.
"thegive way line is there for a reason, to tell drivvers to give way." - yes indeed but it's very dangerous to actually stop there when traffic is moving at speed.
