A Few Tips Re. Spectator Christmas Xword
7 Answers
Just sat down to start this and then to my annoyance, put an answer in the wrong place in the frame! I'd appreciate help to get answer to clue that should have gone there (+ plus a few other tips!)
Apologies if these have already been dealt with in other replies to this xword, but I don't want to read them, would like to wrestle with them myself.
6d) One of Les Six made gold (5) ????? (This is the one that I started to write another answer in: very annoying)
Also, for 2D I've got "ICE COLD" (Freezing on 1/12 up round pass), yet if 27A City gent went on the rampage (6) is an anagram of "went on" then I'd go for "townee" which scuppers ICE COLD from 2d which I can parse too as Ice Cold
99D Need government without king (6) I've put in "EGENCY" ie Regency dropping R for Rex/King. Yet this can't be right as it puts a "Y" in 51 D which is an anagram without a "Y". (Egency = needy apparently).
65A I've got "OREMUS" for "Vocal unit of latin law by old uncle (6) O=Old + remus (uncle).
Should I have laid off the whisky before putting these in?
