Water Filter Jugs...

Didn't know which category this fitted in so hope it's ok here. Thinking of buying a water filter jug as our tap water is dire, but unsure even with the jug as it's plastic and then there's paper for the filters I think and they probably could leave a "taste"....

So has anyone got a water filter jug and if so do you find it beneficial or is it just "another gadget" we don't really need? Thanks in advance for your comments.

I have a Britta filter jug but it doesn't use paper filters. The filters it does use last a month but are not cheap.
The filters are sealed units containing several different things eg activated carbon, silver compounds, ion-exchange resin and need replacing when exhausted...at a price.
If your mains water is, indeed , "dire", you need to complain to your water supplier who will send an inspector to investigate (free service, btw). Often there is a simple explanation/remedy for the problem.
Several years ago I used a Britax water filter as I thought it might be healthier, but quite honestly I came to realise that I'd been brainwashed. (Excuse the pun).

I now reckon that the minerals in tapwater are beneficial and shouldn't be filtered out.
Ok, my tap water did taste a bit odd, but hey! you get used to it, and now my tap water is my drink of preference. Nectar of the gods.

We pay a lot of money to have healthy tap water; that same healthy tap water is used to flush our loos! Why pay more for an additional dubious benefit? Especially when lots of people globally would give their eye teeth for water as good as ours, on tap, every minute of the day and night.

Get real, people, and recognise when you're being duped.
Plus, don't even get me started on bottled water!

Because we have a full house we have 3 Britta filter jugs on the go all the time, makes a great deal of difference, but not cheap.
Balders, if you can fit in your fridge you might be better with the Flow model.

Nice one Danny, will check it out, even if it won't fit the fridge it still makes a lot of sense.

Thanks everyone for your comments/advice. Jury is out at the moment. We have very hard water here and it really doesn't taste that good. Pyxis, I think maybe you might not drink the water if you tasted ours against yours. I don't think we are being duped really, they add so much to the water supply now I am sure it's not natural, especially fluoride, always was against that being forced on us!

Bottled water makes a much nicer cup of tea than our tap water and some years back I had the water company out to test the tap water and they said nothing wrong with, so that's it...down to taste. Thanks again all, appreciate your time.

There's nothing "wrong" with my tapwater - so long as you don't mind taking in about an ounce of chalk with every pint of water you consume. In that respect it is "dire" (witness the amount of crud left behind any time water dries anywhere). Brita filters definitely get rid of most of that crud.
^^Good case of exaggeration, there. Even a hard mains water (350mg/l calcium carbonate total hardness) equates to 1 ounce of calcium carbonate ("chalk") per 150 pints, approx.

Hi NJ, thank you. As I said they tested it years ago. I called them out because we had a black gunge forming around the taps which they had no explanation for, it was fine to them but the taste which of course is what they don't do is down to the individual. At the time I researched black gunge in water and came up with biofilm which you can get an infection from. We both suffer respiratory problems and now reading up on it again I'm wondering if this could the cause...let alone the taste of the stuff!!

A family member living not far away says the same....so it's not just us. Everything is caked in lime scale, stainless steel sink I have to clean daily...it can't be helped as we live on chalk here...sigh.

We were given a voucher for Xmas and OH came up with maybe getting a water jug filter because of the 'dire' taste of water here. I doubt the water co would diss their own product IMO....so no good calling them out just for taste. Catch 22....we either continue having kerappito tea and coffee or use bottled water ...OR purchase the filter jug to enjoy something a little better than we have now. X

@gingejbee....I don't know what you are getting at! I tell it as it is....sorry if it doesn't meet your criteria, but thank you for your knowledge I appreciate your contribution. X
I also get black gunge occasionally forming in the taps in the bathroom sink.I informed the water company about this. All they said was it wasn't a problem as long as I had a drinkable supply in the kitchen.Very helpful, not.

Oh Danny that's not good, I wonder why they won't admit that this could be a problem? Hmmm maybe because they would have to spend money sorting it?? We certainly have worsened in health since living here...could be coincidence or age but let's face it, whatever we take in can affect us ( or not) and we aren't all alike. Some suffer from certain things and others it doesn't affect....c'est la vie but not good if you are on the receiving end!
"^^Good case of exaggeration, there. "

Yes of course I was exaggerating. I don't really expect my water to be 5% chalk. But the principle remains. My drinking water is unpalatable without filtration and there's me thinking that's what I paid the water company to do.
Hello,
In my town the water is not so clean too, and for a log time I use these water filter jugs, but It's wears out too quickly, and I decided to mount a filter directly in the tap. So now I kind off got rid off a problem. I wasn't sure about that but I read a lot of reviews here https://www.osmowaterfilters.com/best-faucet-water-filter-products/. This is my advice, but It' your choice.
