Floods And Disruption In South Manchester And............
15 Answers
..........a major gas leak to contend with. Another reason for the M60 closure. In the middle of the night, a senior gas engineer had to don a harness and life jackets in the pitch black at the side of the rising River Irwell to access a valve that needed shutting off. Three police cars with floodlights were on hand to provide lighting and assistance if required. Just one more aspect of the chaos but an example of the committment of vital services.

In situations such as last night, he is the senior person on site, and the police have to carry out his instructions in relation to the incident in question. If they don't follow his instructions, he can have them arrested for obstruction. Tis true folks.
Absolutely and well done - a mate of mine had the huge glassworks at Rotherham in his company - he had to intervene personally with the S. Yorks Chief Fire Officer a few years ago when the River Don's rising waters were threatening to spill into the glass kilns (imagine the explosion...).
The service responded to their boss's call magnificently and crisis averted - just. Phew - but it is amazing how the emergency services can respond to major crises - or even minor incidents, such as the missing Boaty this morning...well done that (young?) Gloucestershire 101 police front-woman - she was great.

Thanks for that link Roy. For anyone who isn't aware, large parts of Manchester are built on top of old mine workings, particularly from places like Bradford and Moston pits. Abbey Hey is quite close to these, so that might have some significance in the house collapse, bearing in mind all the rain that's fallen.

There is a long historical connection here in that the Yorkists thought that they could undermine Lancashire from Bradford in the late 15th Century....they could have even taken Old Trafford if they had been successful. The mind boggles - Statham or Flintoff could have been deemed Yorkshiremen!
