our pc crashed earlier, in general terms it is now up and running but it now seems to have lost the cd and dvd rom drive settings. they are built into the tower as they always have been, nothing has been removed or disconnected. i've run out of ideas does anyone else have a clue as to what went wrong?
Do they show up in BIOS (press Del or whatever button you're prompted to press "to enter setup" as your PC boots) ?
Any problems showing in "Device Manager" ?
Can I take it they don't show in 'My Computer'? If not, I'd do what stevie21 says. It looks as though you may need to tweak the settings regarding your hard drive settings. It's not difficult, but very wordy to explain and as mistakes can be costly, I'm resisting the temptation.
thanks guys, sorry if the question was'nt too clear but you both seem to have it on the money. no, they dont show up on my computer. i will try as you suggest, dont worry if it is'nt clear where the problem lies i will leave it to someone more able!
IF (and it's a hypothetical so far) a CD drive is disabled in the Device Manager (google the phrase if you don't know how to find it) then it'll not show in My Computer.
I'd check BIOS (or even just the boot screen : the bit under WAIT...) and then Device Manager and (as Roy Walker would tell us) say what you see.
it gets worse, or maybe better. the problem occured when my son installed the i tunes software that came with his new i pod. when we delete that and re-boot, everything returns. so, we download off their web site thinking its a corrupt disc, but the same happens....
