I'm just after cleaning the windows of my car - dirty due to the ice etc. I also needed to fill up my window washer container.

I just checked the oil gauge and I have what is left would be the size of your thumb. I'm off to get petrol - do I need oil. Thanks

I buy oil in 5 litre containers, works out cheaper in the long run. jj just check you buy right grade of oil, it will be in cars handbook.
In England the garages and MOT stations are still open. Perhaps it's different in Northern Ireland
...and, trying to be helpful here, You did put washer additive in along with the water into the washer reservoir...otherwise it'll freeze and can cause damage to components in the system?

If your dipstick has got notches, like this one
https://ibb.co/ykJTXjt
you ideally want to see oil covering all of the notches (but not above it).

It won't matter in the short term if the oil level is only covering one or two of the notches (unless you're setting out on a long run) but you should top the oil up as soon as possible.
Question Author
Chris maybe two notches up
Just top it up a little bit then, Jennyjoan, so that the oil reaches the top of the notched area.

jeepers guys - all I had to do was enter my registration code - and it told me the proper engine oil.
You can get a small can of oil - you don't need a five gallon container if your man normally tops it up or changes it. Putting that in should do the trick as it probably won't overfill it but would stop it causing a problem if its too low now. Have you not got a neighbour who could take a look for you?
Question Author
no I have bought the oil necessary for the car and will pour it in tomorrow.
