If your dipstick has got notches, like this one

you ideally want to see oil covering all of the notches (but not above it).
It won't matter in the short term if the oil level is only covering one or two of the notches (unless you're setting out on a long run) but you should top the oil up as soon as possible.
You can get a small can of oil - you don't need a five gallon container if your man normally tops it up or changes it. Putting that in should do the trick as it probably won't overfill it but would stop it causing a problem if its too low now. Have you not got a neighbour who could take a look for you?
