I've chatted today with two young folk about the Erasmus programme. Will any of the young folk in your circle be affected by the UK withdrawal from this although some UK students will be able to benefit?

I've always thought it was an excellent opportunity for students. It opened doors for so many.

We thought it might have affected my daughter as she will be going to Spain for a year, in Sept, but her uni has told the language students that they will be part of Erasmus for another year.
boris has insisted that Erasmus will not be affected
which in todays climate means anything

Thanks for that, Rocky. So good to know that some students will benefit for at least a year...though where they can travel to is another thing.
I do hope she does get some benefit and fun too.....x
Thank's Gness. She's having a melt down about it at the moment. It's quite a complicated process, but at least she doesn't have to worry about international student status as she's got an Irish passport.

The options look fab though. I wish it was me going ;)

Ah of course the Irish passport should help. The government here has offered to fund NI students if the UK ends participation. That's just brilliant.

You and me both! Wonderful opportunities to develop and to experience so much. When you read of how this has helped and where it's led so many it hurts to think it could be lost. I so hope not.

I gather it's a tad complicated but I'll be really interested in hearing how she gets on.
"The UK government has published a statement regarding the Turing scheme, a new programme to replace the UK’s participation in Erasmus+, which will provide funding for placements and exchanges starting in September 2021. The Turing scheme will support students to study and work abroad; youth and sport placements will not be a part of the scheme. The new scheme will be administered by the same partnership of British Council and Ecorys which has been delivering Erasmus+ in the UK for a number of years.

We expect more information about the scheme to be available shortly and when it is we will direct to it here. We appreciate your patience and look forward to providing further advice and support as soon as we can.

This does not affect the UK’s participation in the Erasmus+ and ESC programmes (2014-2020). Under the Withdrawal Agreement negotiated with the EU, the UK will continue to participate fully in the Erasmus+ and ESC programmes (2014-2020). This means that the projects successfully bid for during the 2014-2020 programmes will continue to receive EU funding for the full duration of the project, including those where funding runs beyond 2020 and the end of the transition period.

Participants who study, train, volunteer or spend time abroad through Erasmus+ and ESC exchanges that were successfully bid for during the Erasmus+ and ESC programmes (2014-2020) will be able to participate fully and for the full duration of their exchange. This covers UK participants going abroad, as well as international participants coming to the UK.

The government remains committed to international education exchanges, both with the EU and beyond.”

I'll certainly let you know how she gets on.
She really wants to go to Salamanca, but there's only 3 places allocated for her uni, so her odds are not good. I'm trying to find out if I can pay for her Spanish uni fees for 2 terms but it's very difficult finding any info on the uni websites. And I don't know if she'll be classified as an international student because of her UK residence, or if the Irish passport will take precedence. When I'm off work in a couple of weeks I'll have to have a good investigation. I'm sure, whatever the outcome, my purse won't be happy.
When this first came about, the government said the Turing scheme would be aimed at disadvantaged students. If it is then a lot of students will miss out. I don't know what the fine print is now, though.

Corby. I knew some of that but not all. Thank you very much for posting. An interesting read and to be followed. You're a star!

Rocky. I'm sure your head will be spinning and your purse hit but it will be so worth it. Wish her luck and I hope Salamanca happens.
Och, it's nae bother GNESS...

I’ll let you know where she gets allocated. Keep your fingers crossed for her :)

Thanks, Rocky. It's something that interests me a great deal. The opportunities we give to youngsters are so important. The wider their experiences the better for all of us.
I will indeed keep my fingers crossed and do let me know...x
