Changing From Iphone 7 To Iphone 12

I have recently swapped from a 7 to a 12 and couldn't believe how easy it was to do. I pretty much just had to set them beside each other and it was done!
Moving forward I have a couple of questions though.
I used to back up/synchronise my phone by attaching it to my laptop by a cable. I know from asking a previous question that that is an ever so slightly old fashioned way of doing it! I think somewhere in the set-up process I said yes to automatic back-ups, but do I need to do anything else? And where does it back-up to? The cloud? Or itunes still?
Do I still need itunes on my laptop?
I pay 79p per month for cloud storage.
