An optical mouse has no ball underneath and no small rollers to get dirty.
Note this is NOT the same thing as a wireless mouse which is one that has no wire connecting it to the PC.

Yes, optical mice are good. I use a laptop and bought a mouse a couple of months ago. Anyhow, whilst browing, I discovered a new type of mouse. Not an optical mouse but a laser mouse.. ooooo!
Don't quite know what the difference is but the obvious difference is the lack of a red beam when you pick the mouse up and look underneath it. Yes, the lens is there, but nothing shines from it! Clever stuff. It's a good mouse and I recommend it highly.
It also has a battery indicator on top of the mouse which only lights up upon movement of the mouse, and goes red when charging is nearing. The buttons are also blended into the mouse. I reckon I charge it once a week on the base.
I don't know how I have managed to describe a computer mouse in so many words but there you go. Oh by the way it's a Logitech MX Laser .

Reason your mouse sticks isn't just that the ball is dirty. If you take out the ball and look inside, you'll see two rollers that the ball presses against that control the cursor movement. You'll see the line of dirt stuck to each of them . Clean the gunge off with a Q-tip and isopropyl alcohol, or meths, clean the ball, re-assemble, and it'll be like new.
If you do go for optical, I'm with Postdog - after several wireless ones, I'm back to a wired mouse, no batteries and a lot fewer problems.

Thanks all for your replies.Have a better idea now.RAYMAN yes I did what you said but frightend to take apart too much in case I don't get it to work again but did get some fluff out and I will admit it is working better.so i will get a new optical one and then give this one another clean and keep it for a spare .And yes the laser ones sound good .Thanks again.
